Yoshihito Isogawa's books are a wonderful learning guide for young mindstorm and/or lego technic enthusiasts. I have used his series for years to train my First Lego League teams on simple machines. They have gained so many ideas from Isogawa's books to build some really amazing FLL robots. As one of my players stated: A complex machine is nothing more than a conglomeration of simple machines. How right he is. And many of the simple machines he has used he learned from Isogawa's books.The Power Functions book utlizes the Lego power function motor set, but can be used with mindstorms or RCX motors. It provides a plethora of mechanisms functions with a variety of gear types, worm drives, turntables, etc. He also has ideas on creating a variety of angular movements. My First Lego League team has said that power functions is Isogawa's best book yet, and are still using his book as they get ready for the FLL World Festival.If you are a mindstorms fan, technic fan, or FLL coach or player, this book really is a must.
This book is filled with great ideas. My son lo es trying out all of the different things you can build with it. He also uses the book as a kind of starting point when he has aidea of his own. If you buy this make sure to get the lego power functions set to go with it. The only negative isn't so much the books fault but more legos fault. Lego does not(as far as I know) let you buy technic pieces. Nor do the sale a box of just pieces. Both of which are a must for this book.
Most lego books instuct on how to build a thing. Yoshihito Isogawa teaches engineering which happens to use legos. The lack of words may have gone a bit too far, but overall it's a great effect and puts the focus on the example creations.
Great potential. Even has part list in back; however, part list fails to give you part numbers. This would be a 5 star if I could go to a website and order parts by part numbers, instead I have a book with fabulous ideas and hardly any parts, or easy way to order. So frustrated. If you are familiar with technic legos and have pieces this will be great!
Great, great resource to learn how to build with LEGO technic.I did two things which greatly improved the workability of the mechanisms. As others have noted, a number of the machines “barely workedâ€. I found the motor, run directly from the battery, ran too fast for the machines. They would shake themselves to pieces rather quickly, especially the reciprocating motion machines.(1) I ran the motors through the PF speed control remote (part #8879), instead of the PF remote in the parts list (part#8885). You can thus run the machines at various speeds, starting about 1/7 of the speed you get without the PF remote w/speed control. (2). I attached my remote, the IR receiver, battery, and the motor to a 32x32 base. Made it much easier to watch the machines functioning, and to change things around.
This book is great for mechanically inclined kids who love engineering. There are easy to follow diagrams to build fun machines in this book. It inspires independent design projects. You will have to find the LEGO technic bricks separately if you don’t already own them. I found most of what I purchased on the LEGO website, some in the pick a brick section. There is a motor set, a remote control, etc. available there.
Holiday present, plus more legos, and kiddo is very happy. Most recent invention, a dino with lights that turn on and off with a switch, and a small car, the kind you pull back and it drives forward. She loves them.
My son loves this series. There is no text in the book but the chapters are divided by function. Very useful book for young lego builders age 4-8. such big and beautiful pictures. we have two books in this series.
